With this new framework, the hook ("with the pistol on my hip like I'm a cop") becomes increasingly discomfiting the more you listen. Ultimately, this is why fastening "BLM Remix" to the track flies in the face of the song's greater temperament. But the concept of rockstardom, as nebulous as that may be, is not affixed to the average Black person in America nor is that dynamic present in average interactions with law enforcement. He raps about his vilification by hometown authorities and challenging their right to seizure of his property he boasts about buying a Lamborghini as an action of resistance as opposed to a transparent display of grandeur. It's a startling image that strikes a dissonant tone: DaBaby invokes Floyd, a man unable to breathe during the last moments of life, as the rapper's own words escalate in volume. Nothing is more emblematic of this delicate dance than the rollout of the song "Rockstar," originally a collaboration with Roddy Rich centered around largesse and extravagance.ĭuring June's BET Awards, however, he premiered a new version of the song, titled the "BLM Remix." DaBaby performs the opening verse lying on the ground, under the knee of a faceless white body, tying his own life's trials and tribulations with those of George Floyd. DaBaby’s nominations at the 63rd Grammy Awards include Record of the Year, Best Melodic Rap Performance, and Best Rap Song for Rockstar with Roddy Rich, as well as Best Rap Performance for. In the first 45 seconds, DaBaby delivered the first verse of the song - which details his experience being racially profiled by police - with his face pressed into the pavement as a white police officer beared down on his neck with his knee, a clear reflection of how Floyd was murdered.ĭaBaby raps: "Cops wanna pull me over, embarrass me / Abusin’ power, you never knew me, thought I was arrogant / As a juvenile, police pulled their guns like they scared of me / What happened, want us to keep it peaceful / Shoulda seen them hating b*tches face when I bought that Lamborghini / Throw up my middle finger, police can’t catch me.DaBaby's omnipresence over the last year threads a thin line between overnight celebrity and over saturation he drops new musical content almost as often as his altercations and antics make their way into the headlines. The pair performed their Black Lives Matter remix of the track. "I don't think there’s a better time for us to be doing a show celebrating Black folks for living in their craft to the best of their abilities." Seales added that she was "more so just keenly aware of the importance of this time" and isn't "taking anything for granted in terms of what this stage means at this time."ĭaBaby and Ricch were also keenly aware of the importance of this time, and used their pre-taped performance of "Rockstar" to send a powerful message. After a knockout, all-star opener from Public Enemy, Nas, Rapsody and more performing PE’s iconic Fight the Power. "It's less about it being during a pandemic and more about it being during a global uprising against racial discrimination," Seales told People ahead of the show. The show's host, Insecure actress Amanda Seales, knew the importance of carrying on the show during such a trying time in America. Mirroring George Floyds death, the BET performance began with DaBaby performing a verse with his neck beneath a policemans knee. The BET awards aired on the heels of the killings of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor by police on May 25 and March 13, respectively. The night was a celebration of Black music, but it also put the Black Lives Matter movement front and center, as many artists sent powerful messages standing for an end to unchecked police brutality against Black men and women, like DaBaby and Roddy Ricch's BET awards "Rockstar" performance. While the 2020 BET Awards aired virtually with no live audience due to the coronavirus pandemic, there was still a lot of ground to cover on Sunday, June 28.

Good customer service means communicating with the customer, and they failed miserably at that. Our "friend" from behind the desk was nowhere to be found, and there were no other vacant tables in the studio. We got to the table and it now had a sign on it stating it was for Terra (I'm not Terra) for however long. So now the part about the overpriced pottery - seriously? $16 for an unglazed cereal bowl? As someone who has worked with clay before and knows the cost of clay, let me just throw it out there that that is more than the cost of an entire block of clay! I get that it's supposed to be about the experience, but how great of an experience would it really be knowing you paid such exorbitant prices for a dish (or whatever you picked)? Despite this, we picked out our pieces and went to sit at the table which had at this point been cleared off and set up for us - well, we thought it was for us. I watched to see if the lady was going to start clearing the table, and after about five minutes she finally did. Not helpful since we were already there and reservation-less, and maybe you should put that on the site? I started to ask a question when she said, "If you guys want to look around and pick your pieces then I guess I can clear off that table over there for you to use," gesturing to a vacant table nearby. "Right, but you should make a reservation because sometimes it gets busy like on the weekends." Okay. She asked if we had a reservation, I told her no since the website indicated it was not necessary to make one as a smaller group. I said hello, explained that we had 3 people in our party, and that it was our first time coming to Color Me Mine. When we arrived and I walked up to the counter, I was curtly greeted with what felt like an obligatory "hi". We were a party of 3 so I figured I'd skip the reservation to give us a little more flexibility on arrival time (nice to have that flexibility with a preschooler!). I assumed this meant they would have the space to accommodate smaller groups that would walk in. We checked the website in advance to see if we needed to make a reservation, but the website states, "We accept reservations and walk-ins!" and I also read that reservations were recommended for large parties, but not necessary for smaller ones. A family member gave us money for Christmas to go to Color Me Mine, so we were excited to finally have a weekend open to do it. Each has her own storyline that ties into the theme of being a "desperate" housewife: accident-prone single mother Susan Mayer ( Teri Hatcher) trying to find love perfect housewife Bree Van de Kamp ( Marcia Cross), mother of two problematic teenagers, who struggles to save her marriage married Lynette Scavo ( Felicity Huffman) tries to be super-mom to four children while longing to return to her life as a corporate executive and materialistic, adulterous ex-runway model Gabrielle Solis ( Eva Longoria) who tries to keep her husband from finding out about her affair, and then finds out she's pregnant. The story unravels through Mary Alice's four friends and neighbors. Ultimately, it is revealed to have contained the skeletal remains of a dead woman's body. Mary Alice's suicide leaves behind a mystery involving her husband Paul Young ( Mark Moses), her son Zach ( Cody Kasch), and a mysterious toy chest, which Paul digs out from underneath the family's pool. The show opens with the suicide of Mary Alice Young ( Brenda Strong), who narrates the episodes from beyond the grave. I had what was supposed to be the Salad with Shrimp (al mojo de ajo - Cuban garlic sauce), and what I got was a wilted bed of lettuce with too much dressing and some extremely fried, overly spiced shrimp, which confused me. This allowed for players to avoid being blown out after a slow-building gameplan, but also made them harder to interact with. By putting the counters on you directly, the experience counters could keep building and wouldn't all be removed alongside the commander. The commanders could produce an effect which scaled with experience counters. Each commander had a condition that allowed you, the player, the gain an experience counter. The designers for Commander 2015 came up with an interesting solution: experience counters.Įxperience counters were a two-part piece. A common concern at the time was making sure that players had some way to still impact the later turns of the game. It seemed natural for a Commander set to swoop by and dole out some new, interesting options for enemy-color-pair enjoyers to pick up, but as with every product in this line, it wanted to experiment and do something new. When the year 2015 opened, there were nearly 1.75 ally-colored cards for every 1 enemy-color cards. They eventually dislodged this notion, as it actively hampered gameplay, but the inequality persisted. Game design decided that enemy color decks needed less mana-fixing overall to represent this flavorful idea that the colors were actively discordant with each other. In the early days of Magic: the Gathering, the distinction between ally and enemy color pairs was held to a higher degree. With this framework in mind, let's dive into the 2015 edition! Commander 2015 Overview In previous installments, I noticed that 2013's decks were best viewed as a way to teach deckbuilding, while 2014 felt like a more complete package where the commander options could at least go in the same deck. I'll be looking at the products with three critical lenses: how it plays out of the box, what it offers to collections, and what kind of impact it had on the format. Commander is an incredibly different animal these days, and the early products provide a wonderful way to examine those early years of the format. No time like the present to look at the past: it's time for Retrospective Reviews! In this installment, I'm continuing my deep dive into the early Commander preconstructed deck releases. Honestly the easiest Audi dealership was in California and were willing to deal and were completely straight forward. Tysons was laughable, agreed on a price and was asking about MF and residual and they told me their MF was like twice what AFS was offering and told me "this is our MF and this what you will get." The guy I was dealing with is no longer there so not sure who to talk to but the sales manager was a good guy (Mike). He attempts to join Wilson and Barnes in their fight, : 5 and believes he is a better embodiment of American values than Rogers was. Army Rangers, and the new Captain America chosen by the U.S. Wyatt Russell as John Walker / Captain America / U.S.Mackie was hesitant about the series, feeling that it would not match the quality of the MCU films and not wanting a Black actor to lead Marvel's first failure, but he was won over by the scripts. : 2 Wilson eventually takes up the shield to become the new Captain America. He added that Wilson is questioning how "a Black man represent a country that does not represent him". Wilson initially continues to use the Falcon moniker in the series, and Mackie said the story would portray the shield as being a burden for the character. : 4 Wilson was handed Captain America's shield by Rogers at the end of Endgame, and the series expands on this moment to explore the implications of a Black man being given that mantle. Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson / Falcon / Captain America:Īn Avenger and a former pararescueman who was trained by the military in aerial combat using a specially-designed wing pack.Co-executive producer Zoie Nagelhout explained that Barnes would be working to "unburden himself" from his life as the Winter Soldier but the darker side of the character would still be seen during the series. Stan explained that Barnes would be struggling with his murderous past while also adjusting to life in the 21st century without Rogers, following the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019). : 4 Head writer Malcolm Spellman noted that Barnes has done "nothing but fight" in the last 100 years, and the series could not avoid the trauma that he has gone through. His programming was later removed, : 4 and the character is now having an identity crisis. Presumed killed in action during World War II, he reemerged in the present day as a brainwashed assassin. Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier:Īn enhanced soldier and the best friend of Steve Rogers / Captain America during the 1940s.Six months after being handed the mantle of Captain America at the end of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Sam Wilson teams up with Bucky Barnes on a global mission to stop an anti-patriotism group, the Flag Smashers, who are enhanced with a recreation of the Super Soldier Serum and believe the world was better during the Blip. A feature film, Captain America: Brave New World (2025), co-written by Spellman, is in development as a continuation of the series. It received several accolades, including five Primetime Emmy Award nominations. The series received positive reviews, with critics highlighting the actors' chemistry and the series' social commentary but criticizing its pacing. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier premiered on March 19, 2021, and ran for six episodes until April 23. Production was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but resumed in Atlanta in September before wrapping in the Czech Republic in October. Filming began in October 2019 in Atlanta, Georgia, before moving to the Czech Republic in March 2020. Skogland was hired to direct the next month. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was announced in April 2019, when Stan and Mackie were confirmed to be starring. Spellman was hired in October, and chose to focus on the racial and political issues raised by Wilson, a Black man, being handed Captain America's shield at the end of Endgame. By September 2018, Marvel Studios was developing a number of limited series for Disney+ centered on supporting characters from the MCU films, such as Wilson and Barnes. Sebastian Stan and Anthony Mackie reprise their respective roles as Barnes and Wilson from the film series, with Wyatt Russell, Erin Kellyman, Danny Ramirez, Georges St-Pierre, Adepero Oduye, Don Cheadle, Daniel Brühl, Emily VanCamp, Florence Kasumba, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus also starring. Spellman served as head writer for the series, which was directed by Kari Skogland. Wilson teams up with Bucky Barnes to stop anti-patriots who believe the world was better during the Blip. It is the second television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios, sharing continuity with the films of the franchise, and is set six months after Sam Wilson was handed the mantle of Captain America in the film Avengers: Endgame (2019). The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is an American television miniseries created by Malcolm Spellman for the streaming service Disney+, based on Marvel Comics featuring the characters Sam Wilson / Falcon and Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier.

No discussion of Marling is complete without some reference to her precocity, but here she asks of a lover: "Would you watch my body weaken/ My mind drift away," imagining an infirm life at the age of 21.īy the end, what have we learned about Marling? That her "love is driven by rage", and that, by the final track, "All My Rage", she is prepared to let that rage go. She does a mean Leonard Cohen impression, too, on the accomplished "Night After Night". It's compelling to hear this slight and pale Englishwoman play at Dylan. "Where I've been lately is no concern of yours," sneers Marling, making like Dylan. "Sophia" gets her own song later, a cathartic southern rock shakedown. On "The Beast", Marling summons "the goddess of power", Sophia. Later, "The Beast" provides a mighty, brooding centrepiece to the album. That unnamed beast makes its first dark appearance in track one, "The Muse" ("I'm nothing but a beast/ And I call you when I need to feast"). One of the great nerdy satisfactions of A Creature I Don't Know is how crisscrossed it is with internal references. Mainly, though, she's warning people not to pry: "Don't ask me why and I'll tell you no lies." "Those of us who are lost and low/ I know how you feel/ I know it's not right/ But it's real," Marling offers, with uncharacteristic sympathy. Creature's most user-friendly ballad, "Don't Ask Me Why", comes within air-kissing distance of what people are supposed to want from a female singer-songwriter. Marling really hits her stride three tracks in. "I showed you my hand once/ And you hit me in fear," she notes at one point. Where before her songs were wintry and closed, "Salinas" is loose and sprawling. Album number three doesn't get us any closer to an unguarded emotion but it does find this buttoned-up artist inhabiting her craft with ever-greater aplomb. If Marling has appeared distant – frustratingly so at times – her actual songs give off more heat than her uptight persona suggests. Rather, she has cleaved closer to the Bob Dylan "keep 'em guessing" axis, while vocally channelling the high priestess of acoustic ice, Joni Mitchell. It's because, despite her role as the handmaiden of the recent British folk-pop revival, Marling has never bared all in the role of a confessional singer-songwriter. Despite knocking out a pair of albums by the age of 20, embarking upon relationships with two other folk singers – that's Charlie Fink and Marcus Mumford – and having endured an entire record written about one of those break-ups – that's Noah and the Whale's The First Days Of Spring – Marling has always seemed tantalisingly inscrutable. Could the title of Laura Marling's third album refer to the singer herself? She is, after all, a creature we still don't really know. |
